Narcisse Virgile DIAZ DE LA PEÑA (1807-1876) - Lot 47
Narcisse Virgile DIAZ DE LA PEÑA (1807-1876) Dancers with tambourines. Oil on canvas. 46 x 37.8 cm. Signed in red N. Diaz lower right. Stencilled mark on reverse Hardy Alan (canvas supplier in Paris). Needs restoration. Note: A Spanish-born painter from Bordeaux, he was one of the most charismatic members of the Barbizon group. The present work is in keeping with his Hispanic and Orientalist style, in parallel with pleinairism. He was a tutelary figure for Pierre Auguste Renoir, whom he supported financially in his early years.
