Josef Maria OLBRICH (1867-1908)- Darmstadt School - Piano - Lot 3
Josef Maria OLBRICH (1867-1908)- Darmstadt School - Piano
Piano made in collaboration with Carl Mand, 1902-1906, for the 1907 World's Fair. The cabinet is inlaid with stylized motifs in the spirit of the Viennese Secession. The frame bears the number 12297. A very similar model in the Museum Künstlerkolonie Darmstadt (N°INV. DSC06264). 95.5 x 185 x 146.5 cm. Accompanied by a Secessionist-style stool.
The piano is dismantled, stored in a furniture repository in Walloon Brabant and not visible at the exhibition. It was restored in the early '90s, but a few scratches require re-varnishing (including 5 major scratches on the right-hand side). See detailed photographs. The structure and frame appear to be in good condition. The sale price will be reserved until the instrument has been reassembled and fully received within a reasonable time, but in all cases transport will be at the buyer's expense.
Note: A German architect who built the Secession Palace in Vienna in 1897, Olbrich was hired by the Duke of Hesse in 1899 to supervise the construction of the Mathildenhohe in Darmstadt. He died prematurely in 1908 in Dusseldorf. (Art nouveau - Jugendstil - Viennese Secession - Modern Style - German School - Austrian School)
